Electronic submission of artwork

All artwork submitted electronically will be accepted, provided it meets our digital illustration standards. Submit a sample file of electronic artwork to your editor at an early stage so that this can be verified or resolved otherwise. All files must be accompanied by a hard copy printout of illustrations, and files will be accepted on the following media:

· 3.5” high or double density floppy disk (PC or MacIntosh)
· 100MB Zip disk (PC or MacIntosh)
· CD-ROM (PC or MacIntosh)

If you are submitting artwork as digital files, please DO:

Line artwork
· Line drawings to be submitted as EPS (use EPS as an extension, e.g. Fig01.eps), in Word or PDF files.
· Use postscript printer to create the EPS file.
· Use the embedding feature, if available, or the standard fonts (Arial, Helvetica or Times). Use black text over light to mid-grey and white text over black or dark grey
· Label in lower case, except as appropriate initial capitals and necessary mathematical notations.
· Discuss layout and appearance with your editor to ensure proper aesthetics (font size as related to illustration size).
· Centre each file and make the final saving with the correct orientation; standard minimum final width is 65 mm, however be aware that it may be necessary to resize and relabel the artwork to fit the book format.
· For multiple-parts illustrations, please submit each part as a separate file so as to simplify the fitting of all parts into the book’s layout structure.
· Remember to submit a hard copy for all electronic artwork.
· Black and white artwork is to be saved in 1 bit, tinted artwork is to be saved in 8 bit.

Photographs
· Provide photos as TIFF files, saved with a PC preview (if possible), cropped close to the edge of the image so as to maximize reduction of the white space surrounding it; resolution at 300 dpi at final size. If possible, avoid compressing the TIFF files; however, for very large images, compression software may be utilized but specify the type of compression used (e.g. LZS, WinZip, etc.).
·If you are not able to supply TIFF files, EPS files can be accepted. Ensure that they are saved in 8 bit or 32 bit for b/w or colour pictures, respectively. Also remember to give the file the EPS extension (e.g. Fig 01.eps).
· For your information, note that images downloaded from internet have a resolution of only 96 dpi, therefore are unsuitable for conventional printing.

Please DO NOT:

· Embed images within the text (save them as separate files)
· Provide artwork in its original creation form. Most software programs provide the option to “save as” or export as EPS or TIFF.
· Submit artwork in Word or PowerPoint; the majority of files saved in these formats are low resolution (less than300 dpi), therefore unusable for printing purposes.
· Use line weight of less than 0.25 since these show up on the monitor but not in print.
· Provide captions as part of the figure or illustration (as mentioned above, these are to be submitted separately).
· Separate CMYK files (provide a single 4-colour image).

Scanned artwork

Scanned line-graphics
· Line artwork is to be provided with the scanning at 800 dpi if it will be utilized in its original size, or at 400 dpi if it will be reduced 50%, or at 200 dpi if reduced at 40% of the original size. Please specify, if any, the reduction required.
· Scans that are not relabelled must be saved as LZW-compressed TIFF files (indicate the saved TIFF extension, e.g. Fig. 01.tif) and indicate if the figure has been compressed.

Imported scanned line-graphics
· Whenever scanned graphics are to be labelled in a DTP application: if possible the imported files should be completely digitally integrated in its high-resolution mode, i.e. embedded on import and not linked to a low-resolution mode, saved as an EPS with indicated extension (i.e. Fig03.eps) and possibly with a PC preview.
· Before labelling is added, make sure you downsize the imported scans, if required.
· Scans that are tinted should be saved as EPS in Photoshop with “save whites as transparent” option checked. The imported bitmap preview should be in the foreground of the final document.
· Import all other scans as TIFF.

Scanned photos
· Scan at 300 dpi
· 125 mm width (approx)
· Save as TIFF file
· Greyscale
· DO NOT embed in Word or Powerpoint format

Digital camera
· Usually, most digital cameras have JPG as their default file format. However, some can be set to save as TIFF and if your camera has this option, select it.
· Set the camera to the highest quality JPG it has available (the ‘settings’ menu will read “fine/superfine/best/top” )
· Download the file and then save it to TIFF; for any other type of digital image, follow instructions provided.
· AVOID manipulation of the JPG file in any way before saving it to TIFF as otherwise image quality will be deteriorated; this does not happen when in TIFF format.
